Juanita Johnson Obituary

Juanita Johnson, 94 of Mexia, passed away on February 9, 2024 in Mexia.  Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 16, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Jones Funeral Services Chapel.  Interment will follow at Wortham Cemetery.  Visitation with the family will be prior to the service, starting at 1:00 p.m. 

Mrs. Johnson was born on January 1, 1930 in Kirvin, Texas to Horace Leonard & Hallie Veola Cleere Teer.  She had been in the community since birth.  She retired from the Mexia State School, where she was a supervisor on Shamrock.  Juanita was a member of the Jehovah’s Witness Congregation and family was everything to her.  The thing she looked most forward to were the annual family reunions.  Juanita was truly the matriarch of the family.  She raised her grandchildren and her home was always open.  She sold Avon, enjoyed gardening, canning, making jellies and shelling peas while watching heehaw. 

Juanita was preceded in death by her husband, Jake Johnson; daughter, Brenda (Cowart) Stone; sons, Jimmy Cowart and Marvin Cowart; granddaughter, Lori Murray; sisters, Dorothy Hilscher and Margaret Rogers; brothers, LaDayle Johnson and Freddy Teer.   

Survivors include her grandchildren, Stacy Faglie & husband, Jack of Mexia; Shawn Todd & husband, Joe of Early, Texas; Jerred Cowart of San Angelo, Texas, Troy Stone & wife Cortney of Novice, Texas, Travis Cowart of San Angelo, Texas, Candice Cowart Mowrey & husband, Michael of San Angelo, Texas, Jordan Carter & wife, Rachel of Hamilton, Alabama and Dillan Cowart Davidson of Utah; Son, Jackie Cowart & wife, Anne of San Angelo. Texas; brother, Bobby Teer of Corsicana, Texas; daughter-in-law, Luisa Cowart of Big Lake, Texas; as well as numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and extended family and close friends.

Serving as pallbearers are Nathan Todd, Chipper Hill, Jordan Carter, Troy Stone, Austen Harris, Randy Castlow.  Honorary pallbearers are Zach Morgan and Cecil Allen.
